Before

When I first bought the book 'Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' looking at the cream colored cover you get the feeling the book is based on something old and very secretive because the picture doesn’t show much life or who the person is. I expected this book to be actually quite bad and a book that would require a lot of explaining to me. The book could be told by reading the blurb had some relevance to the Holocaust also the striped pyjamas picture could be easily seen has a prisoner’s uniform due to the numbers which made it obvious that this book had something to do with prisons for Jews.

During

The first few chapters of this book made it seem like a younger kid’s book but as I kept on reading I discovered little things which made the book more interesting. Things that had to with innocence and also the misfortune to the Jews. The book became interesting as you near the middle of the book. Things you wouldn’t have understood at the start became clearer with flash backs. All the character became shown and known by now which reduced confusion and surprise near the end which sometimes is a good thing. The novel while reading the book for me required some turning back pages finding what had been said then going forward again. This I doubt is not because of my low intellectuality but the fact that the book has a bad order. Other things that happened in this book like what is mother doing with Kotler and is Fathers mother a Jew start to question you and has its own little story away from the main one.

After

As I finished the book and looked back on it by myself and also in class I realized how this book has true meaning. It wasn’t just a kid’s book anymore it was a book that showed historical truths while also transforming them into something a little different. If advice is to be given on how to read the book properly I would advise never to watch the movie after reading the book or until you have finished all the essays and other school work on the book. This is because like the saying ‘a picture equals a thousand words’ the images of what happens in the movie stay in your head and combine with what happened in the book. Because at school we are doing the book not the movie facts and the book will be erased for the movie, one example would be how mothers relationship with Kotler is shown differently in the movie rather than the book. My favorite character in the book would have to be mother. She was a little suspicious with Kurt as the book neared the middle and if she was angry she would show it, she along with Grandmother with her never back down attitude also another favorite  are my two most like  characters in the book. My least favorite character would be Bruno his ignorance when talking to Shmuel and exaggerated innocence was quite annoying and the way he treats his best friend is not right.

In the end to book was well written and became interesting, the end to the book seemed rush lots of scenarios could happened to change the book a bit. All in all i like this book alot because of its truth somewhat, and all the little details.
