The days continued; Mother and Gretel were living in Berlin whilst Father was still back at out-with. Today was the day that Bruno had his funeral.

Father, Mother and Gretel were all there. The Fury could not make it but he had sent a card. It was only a small gesture, a gesture of sympathy from the man responsible for the death of the boy, the commandant’s son.  Mother was crying all throughout the funeral and when Father went to comfort her Mother simply turned away. Mother was angry at Father; she held the Fury and Father responsible for the death of Bruno.

There was a vast display of flowers and mourners at the Funeral. All these people here for a mere urn sitting on a bed flowers.

The commandant stood strong during the whole procession but as Bruno's urn slowly sank into his grave a single tear rolled down from Fathers face and landed on the ground. The quietness of the atmosphere made the tear be heard by all.

As the procession drew to an end, the flag was waved and 'Heil Hitler' was said. Mother’s hand did not rise nor did Gretel’s. Gretel had changed after the death of her brother. When she moved back to Berlin she did not take with her: any posters, she did not take any books, all she took was a hatred for the Fury.

After that day Father returned to Out- With. He lived in an empty house where someone new had come to peel the potatoes and where Maria stayed to help Father. Less and less Jews came into the camp and most ‘left’ straight away. This resulted in less people being around and father living in emptiness, his only company in the end were the Jews itself.

Back in Berlin the days went on where Mother stayed at the window waiting to see her son full of excitement and joy bursting through the doors with his friends. As the days passed the more anxious Mother got and never would let realize the fact that Bruno will never come back.

Gretel grew older. She had met up with her old friends again and life was back to normal. Her dolls came back and each day she spent fixing them up. She may have seemed normal but she will never forget the day Bruno died.
